With the Cork Burger Festival now in full swing, it was about time I went down to the city to try some burgers! On Wednesday I got invited to my first Irish blogger meet-up, hosted by Festival Cork and to get a sneak peek at what Yellow Sub is serving for the festival. Yellow Sub only started serving sliders a couple of days ago but you wouldn’t be able to tell from the quality, it was spot on!
The atmosphere was great right off the bat, there was loads of talking and laughs all over the place while the first sliders were being served. We started off our night with Fried chicken with lettuce, tomato and sub sauce. Sounds basic? Well turns out the key to success was in the sauce for this one! It had just the right amount of spice, which turned this burger into something a little bit more fiery than chicken burgers usually are.
Along side this chicken slider came the Braised Sticky Beef Brisket with Wasabi Mayo and Spicy Slaw. WHOW did this burger hit me hard! They sure know how to combine spices over at Yellow Sub, I can honestly say I never had a burger quite like this one before, as you usually would find the slaw next to your burger instead of in it.I don’t know why but this burger also kind of gave me a holiday feeling, as if I was in a country in the blistering heat and all that was missing was a cocktail. Don’t ask me why though, maybe there are some Southern spices involved that gave me that feeling but whatever it was, it was damn good!
We were then treated to the special of the week, which was a burger I had never had before and was testimony of some great creativity from the chefs at Yellow Sub: Beef and Bone Marrow Pattie, Caramelised Onion, bacon, Roasted Beetroot, Lettuce, Fried Quails Egg! I know it’s very hard to use quail eggs so for them to add this to their sliders was a brilliant move! Although I do quite like beetroot, it can very often go wrong but again it was a hit with this meal, it just goes so well with bacon and beef! It also came with some mac & cheese, which was hands-down the best mac & cheese I ever had! A crispy layer on top, smooth sauce and macaroni cooked to perfection: it was a great alternative to the usual chips you get along with burgers. After these three sliders I was already kind of full, but if you are still feeling peckish afterwards you can try one of their tacos, I heard the fish taco is very lovely!
At the end of our evening we were treated to a big slice of brownie with blow torched marshmallows.. pure heaven! Unfortunately my photo didn’t turn out so well (I am still kicking myself in the head for not bringing my camera!) so you’ll just have to go down there to try it yourself. I must say for such a new place they really are doing well, I was in the city the next day and I noticed it was quite busy down there as well so I wish them all the best and hope their success will continue!
