The one thing I dislike the most about living in a city apartment.. is not having my own garden. Being able to grow your own vegetables, fruit and herbs or just having a small piece of grass to walk and lie on in the summer would be an absolute delight! Thank god for my parents and their garden! Last week the weather was so lovely out here in Belgium that I decided to make my own infused water and have a picknick in my parents garden while shooting the photos for this recipe.
It was the first time I had made and drank infused water but I drink grenadine with water all the time so I figured going for a completely sugar & calorie free and therefor healthier option was worth the try. As it was my first time, I didn’t go for any crazy ingredients and kept it pretty basic with just some lemon, mint and cucumber but I already know I’ll be trying a lot more things soon, as it’s the perfect way to try out some of the crazy flavor combinations I’ve been learning about.
This drink will keep you hydrated, is a great detox drink and is so healthy for you. To name just a few of the benefits of the ingredients:
Antioxidant & anti-inflammatory
Reduced risk of certain cancer
Great hangover cure
Rich in dietary fibers so great for weight loss ad helps digestion
High in potassium, magnesium and fiber which makes it good for treating both low and high blood pressure
Contains a hormone, needed by the cells of the pancreas for producing insulin, which has been found to be beneficial to diabetic patients
Rich in vitamin A, B1, B6, C & D, K, Folate, Calcium
Mouth & breath refreshener
Helps digestion and reduces inflammation, headaches and nausea
Natural stimulant which can help charge your energy when feeling depressed or fatigued
Good effect on alertness, memory and cognitive function
Consumes fat and turns it into energy -> weight loss again!
Lower risk of strokes
Rich in antioxidant vitamin C and can help fight cancer and boosts your immune system
Lower risk of developing asthma
Helps you stay calm and cool
Helps digestion and with weight loss
Acts as a blood purifier and cleansing agent as it helps to get rid of bacteria and toxins
Careful though, as with anything in the world: overdoing it is not good for you. So don’t go gobbling down cucumbers, loads of mint and kilos of lemon, the health benefits will disappear so simply stick to using it in moderation, like in this recipe.
Makes: 1 liter of infused water
- 2 lemons
- 1/2 cucumber (around 15cm)
- 5 twigs of mint
- 1l of water
Optional: ice cubes
There isn’t much to say about the preparation as it’s basically just slicing the ingredients but there are two ways to slice it up. You can either peel the lemon and cucumber or don’t. I chose to half peel the cucumber and not peel the lemon but that’s only a good idea if you’re using organic lemons cause there might be some chemicals on the rind of the lemon if it’s not organic. I have also been told that leaving the rind on will give the water a bit of a bitter taste after a while but I personally didn’t experience this yet so it really is just up to you what you do with it, but again: only if they are free of chemicals. Same thing goes for the cucumbers really, if it’s not organic you should consider at least half peeling it like I did, or remove all the peel.
Whatever you do, make sure you wash both the cucumber and lemons before slicing.
All you have to do is put the mint twigs at the bottom of a jug, slice up cucumber and lemon in slices and put them in the jug as well and then fill it up. And then we wait.. for at least 4 hours in the fridge (very important!), until all the flavors have infused in the water. You can refill the water again and again and again but the fresher the better! If you want to add more water, wait until you’re about halfway through, let it stay like that for a bit and then add more water, that way you’ll still have flavored water from before, plus extra flavor from having less water and the same ingredients so it won’t take as long before you can drink it again once you add the water. I only waited for 4 hours when I first made it and then I never waited so long again and just kept refilling and drinking all day. If you find that the flavors have become to weak, simply wait just a bit longer before drinking again.
Also, I’ve never used my fruits for longer than 2 days in a row cause you really don’t want the fruit to decompose. Last but not least: feel free to add some ice cubs to your drink!
